A Message from EKU President Michael T. Benson
As a new year begins, we welcome students, faculty and staff to campus with great anticipation. Move in Day, the Big E Welcome, and Student Convocation are several events where we come together as a university to celebrate learning and the college experience.
In light of recent events in Charlottesville, be assured that your safety is our number one concern. What we have witnessed recently, displayed by a few, in the hometown of one of America’s great public universities is destructive to the very core of what a university is, and what we should represent as a higher education community. We extend our most sincere condolences to those who have suffered as a result of this inexcusable violence and stand with our colleagues at the University of Virginia.
People have heard me speak before about the meaning of the word, university: to turn to one; to be united in our common purpose of discovering, pursuing, and disseminating knowledge for the betterment of society. As we celebrate and assemble together in the coming weeks, I ask that you exercise tolerance, and understanding of your fellow Colonels. We have a commitment to create a campus community at Eastern Kentucky University which is welcoming and safe for all people.
EKU is the “ School of Opportunity." This means all who knock on our doors seeking educational or career advancement will be met with an extended hand of welcome and with every effort to help them succeed.
It takes our entire campus community to make that happen. Together, we can enjoy great achievement. I look forward to working with everyone to make this a “Maroon Letter" year.
Welcome to Eastern Kentucky University.
